A vCard QR code is just a contact card in QR form: your details packed into a scannable square. Point a phone camera at it and the phone offers to save you as a contact, name, number, email and company already filled in. The odd name comes from the file format inside; everything else about it is ordinary. You can make one for free in a couple of minutes, no app required on either end.

Before you put one on 500 business cards, though, there are two things worth understanding: what is actually inside the code, and why stuffing every field into it is the most common way these codes fail in print.

vCard is a plain-text contact format that has been around since the 1990s. It is the same format behind the .vcf files phones exchange. A QR version simply prints that text into the pattern:

That is the whole trick. The phone's camera recognizes the format and hands it to the contacts app. Version 3.0 is the sweet spot: it is the dialect both iOS and Android parse reliably, so that is what a good vCard QR generator produces.

Here is the thing that separates contact codes from every other QR type: the more you put in, the harder the code becomes to scan.

A QR code holds at most 2,953 bytes, and every field you add makes the pattern denser. A name and phone number make a clean, chunky code. Add company, title, two phones, email, website, and a postal address, and you get a fine-grained pattern that phones struggle with at small sizes, exactly where business cards live. A photo is not even possible: image data is kilobytes of text once encoded, past the cap before you start.

Practical rules that follow from this:

  • For a static code on a business card, be ruthless. Name, one phone, one email. Every extra field costs scannability.
  • Print at 2 x 2 cm or larger and keep strong contrast between the code and the background.
  • Test at actual print size before the run, on both an iPhone and an Android, not on your screen at 400% zoom.
  • Skip the logo overlay on a static contact code. A center logo relies on the code's error correction headroom, and a data-heavy contact code needs that headroom for scanning reliability. Put the logo on the card design instead. Dynamic codes carry so little data that a logo is harmless there.

One more field worth a decision: your LinkedIn or social profile. The vCard URL field takes exactly one link, and every character of it makes a static code denser. If the point of your card is "connect with me everywhere", you are better served by a QR code that opens your LinkedIn or a link-in-bio page than by cramming URLs into the contact card itself.

A static contact code carries the contact data itself. It works with no internet and the preview appears instantly. The costs: the density problem above, no photo, and the data is frozen the moment you print.

A dynamic contact code encodes a short link instead. Scanning opens a small hosted contact page with your details, a photo if you want one, and a save-contact button that downloads the same .vcf file. Because the printed pattern is just a short URL, the code stays chunky and scannable at tiny sizes. And because the destination lives in a dashboard, it stays editable and every scan is counted.

The scenario that decides it for most people: you change jobs, or your number changes. With static codes, every printed card is now wrong. With a dynamic code, you edit one field and the cards in other people's hands quietly start serving the new details.

If your details are stable and offline scanning matters, static is fine. For business cards, conference badges, and anything with a shelf life, dynamic is the safer print.

  • Storefront doors and service vans. "Save our number before you need it" works better than hoping someone writes it down at a red light.
  • Slide decks. Last slide, next to "questions?". The people who want to follow up save you on the spot instead of finding you on LinkedIn three days later, maybe.

The common thread: a contact code removes the typing step at exactly the moment someone has decided you are worth saving.
