Can a QR Code Track Your Location? How QR Geolocation Actually Works
Can a QR code track your location? Roughly — city-level via IP, never GPS. What scan data QR codes really collect, and how marketers use it.

Short answer: yes, a QR code scan can reveal your approximate location — usually the city you're in — but a QR code cannot see your GPS position, follow you around, or identify you personally. The tracking doesn't happen in the code itself. It happens in the link the code opens.
That distinction matters whether you're a marketer who wants scan locations on a map, or someone who just scanned a poster and is now wondering what it learned about you. Let's take both angles.
There is no chip, no sensor, and no software inside a QR code. It's a pattern of squares that encodes a short piece of text — most often a URL. Printing a QR code on a flyer gives it exactly as much tracking ability as printing the URL in letters: none.
Everything people call "QR code tracking" happens after the scan, when your phone opens that URL. So the real question is: what can a website learn about your location when you visit it?
Trackable QR codes are dynamic codes. Instead of encoding the destination directly, the code contains a short redirect link — something like metricqr.com/c/abc123. When someone scans it, the request passes through the redirect server for a few milliseconds before landing on the destination page. In that moment, the server can read two things from the request:
- The IP address the request came from. Every internet connection has one, and IP addresses map to geographic regions. This is how a scan gets placed on a map — the same technique any website can use on any visitor.
- The user agent — which browser and operating system made the request. That's where device and browser stats come from.
Note what's not on that list: GPS. An HTTP request carries no GPS coordinates. IP-based geolocation typically resolves to the right country almost always, the right city most of the time, and nothing more specific than that. A scan from a phone on mobile data sometimes resolves to a neighboring city, because carriers route traffic through regional gateways.
If you've seen QR tools advertise "precise" or "GPS-level" location tracking, it's worth knowing what's technically possible:
- IP geolocation (what nearly every QR analytics tool uses, including MetricQR): country, region, city. No permission prompt, because it's the same passive information every website sees.
- Browser geolocation (actual GPS): a destination page can ask the phone for its exact position — but the person sees an explicit "Allow this site to access your location?" prompt and has to tap yes. No QR platform can silently take GPS coordinates. If a tool implies otherwise, it's overselling.
There's also a third thing people mix up: putting a location into a QR code. A location QR code encodes GPS coordinates so that scanning it opens the spot in a maps app — useful for event venues, trailheads, or parking. That's broadcasting a location you chose, not tracking the scanner. Different tool for a different job.
Scanning a QR code does not give anyone your:
- Name, phone number, or email address
- Contacts, photos, or anything else on your phone
- Exact street address or live GPS position (without the consent prompt above)
- Movements after you leave the page
A scan is a single website visit. Once you close the tab, the connection is over. The genuine risk with unknown QR codes isn't surveillance — it's being sent to a phishing page, which is why your phone previews the URL before opening it.
City-level accuracy sounds like a limitation until you use it. Aggregate scan locations answer questions that are otherwise guesswork with print media:
- Which placements work. Same campaign, different codes per city or venue — the map shows which posters actually get scanned instead of just displayed.
- Where demand is. A restaurant chain testing a new menu sees which locations' tables generate scans. A product with retail packaging sees which regions engage after purchase.
- When to be live. Combined with time-of-day data, you know that scans spike weekday lunchtimes in two cities and weekends in a third — and can schedule staff, stock, or ad spend to match.

One implementation detail worth asking any QR vendor about: what happens to the IP address after geolocation. The IP is needed for a moment to resolve a city — but there's no reason to keep it. Can someone find my home address from a QR scan? No. IP geolocation resolves to a city or region at best. It cannot identify a street, building, or person.
Does a VPN hide my location from QR tracking? Yes. The scan will appear to come from wherever your VPN exit server is, which is one reason marketers should read geo data as a strong signal, not a census.
Can a QR code keep tracking me after I scan it? No. Tracking is limited to the moment the link opens. A destination website can set cookies like any other site, but the QR code adds nothing to that.
Do static QR codes track location? No. A static code points straight at the destination with no redirect step, so nothing is measured — no scan counts, no locations. That's the trade-off: dynamic codes are editable and measurable; static ones are dumb ink.
Is city-level data accurate enough for campaign decisions? For comparing placements, regions, and time windows — yes, comfortably. For anything requiring exact positions, no tool can honestly offer that without the user's explicit GPS consent.
