GPS QR Codes: Encoding Exact Coordinates

A GPS QR code encodes a latitude and longitude pair rather than a street address. Latitude runs from -90 to 90 and longitude from -180 to 180, and the generator stores both to six decimal places — a resolution of roughly eleven centimetres on the ground. You are not pointing someone at a building; you are pointing them at a spot.

That distinction is the whole value. A street address is interpreted by whichever mapping service the person uses, and interpretations differ — a large site may resolve to its registered office rather than its loading bay, and a rural address may resolve to the centre of a postcode covering several fields. GPS coordinates are unambiguous, which is why they are the right choice for anywhere a street address is vague, contested or simply absent.

There are three ways to set the coordinates in the GPS QR code generator above. Places with no useful postal address are where this earns its keep: trailheads and car parks, festival entrances and gates, construction site access points, farm and estate entrances, boat ramps, campus meeting points, and the specific door of a large venue rather than its main reception.

Static vs Trackable Location QR Codes

A static location QR code encodes a geo URI — the standard scheme for handing coordinates to a mapping application. Android registers a handler for it and will offer the maps apps installed on the device, so it works cleanly there. It needs no internet connection to resolve, because the coordinates are inside the pattern.

iOS is the complication, and it is worth knowing before you print anything. Apple has never registered a handler for the geo scheme, so on an iPhone the result depends on the scanning app: some pass it through to Maps, and many simply display the raw coordinate text with nothing to tap. For a code going on public signage where you cannot control which phone reads it, that is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.

A trackable location QR code sidesteps the problem entirely. The pattern encodes a short link, and scanning it opens a page showing the point on a map with a navigation button that works the same on both platforms. You also get the two things a static code cannot offer: scan analytics, and the ability to move the pin later without reprinting — which matters for anything seasonal, like a pickup point that shifts between sites or an event entrance that moves year to year.

How Precise Is the Location in a QR Code?

The coordinates themselves are stored to six decimal places, which is about eleven centimetres. That is finer than the hardware at the other end can actually resolve: a phone GPS in good conditions is accurate to roughly three to five metres, and considerably worse among tall buildings or under tree cover. In practice the code is never the limiting factor — the receiving device is.

If you came here looking for precise location tracking, it is worth separating two things that sound similar and are not. The location encoded in the code is the destination you chose. The location shown in your scan analytics is something entirely different: an approximate city, region and country derived from the scanner’s network address, which is typically accurate to a city and can be wrong on mobile networks where it may reflect the carrier gateway rather than the person.

So a location QR code does not report where the person scanning it is standing. It tells them where to go, and separately tells you that a scan happened, roughly in which city, at what time and on what kind of device. There is no GPS reading taken from the scanner, no precise position captured, and no IP address stored — the address is used in memory to derive the approximate location and then discarded.
