The encryption option in the generator describes how your network is secured, not how the QR code is secured. It tells the scanning device which handshake to use when it connects — WPA2 for most networks in service today, WPA3 for newer hardware, WEP only for legacy equipment, or no encryption for an open network. It has to match your router: pick the wrong type and the phone will attempt the wrong handshake and simply fail to join.

It is worth being clear about what this does not do, because it is a common and understandable misconception. A static WiFi QR code carries your network name and password inside the pattern itself, in readable form. Anyone can scan it with an ordinary QR reader app and see the password as text rather than connecting with it. The code is a convenience, not a secret — a printed WiFi code should be treated exactly like a password written on a card sitting on the counter.

For a café, a waiting room or a holiday rental that is usually fine, and it is why the sensible pattern is a separate guest network with its own password. Put the code on the guest SSID and your main network stays untouched, whoever photographs the sign. Rotating the guest password periodically costs nothing and limits how long an old photo of your code stays useful.

A trackable WiFi QR code changes the arithmetic slightly. The pattern encodes a short link rather than the credentials, so the password cannot be extracted from the printed image itself — it lives on a page that shows the network details with a copy button. Anyone who scans still sees it, so it is not a secret either, but you gain two things that matter: you can change the password without reprinting the sign, and you can see how often the code is actually being used.
