What is an SMS QR Code?

An SMS QR code automatically opens a text message with a pre-filled number and message when scanned. It streamlines mobile communication by eliminating the need to manually enter phone numbers or type messages. When someone scans the code, their phone's messaging app opens instantly with your specified content ready to send. When using a Trackable SMS QR Code, the user will see a tailored page with the information laid out, and the option to instantly open up the message on their device's default messaging app.

QR Codes for Texting: How They Actually Work

A QR code for texting encodes two things: the number the message should go to, and the text that should already be in the box. Scanning it opens the phone’s normal messaging app with both fields filled in, so the person scanning writes nothing — they just review and press send.

The message is never sent automatically. Every mobile operating system requires the person to tap send themselves, which is a deliberate safeguard against codes that would otherwise fire messages from a stranger’s number without their knowledge. In practice this is a feature rather than a limitation: people are far more willing to scan something that shows them exactly what they are about to send.

The direction matters and is easy to get backwards. The number you enter is the recipient, so the person scanning is texting you. This is what makes texting QR codes useful for opt-ins, support requests and text-to-join campaigns — a keyword like JOIN sitting pre-written in the box, ready to go to your shortcode or business line.

Keep the pre-filled message short. Long bodies are truncated by some messaging apps and occasionally dropped altogether, and a short keyword is easier for you to parse on the receiving end anyway. Enter the number in full international format, starting with the country code, so it works for anyone scanning from abroad.

SMS QR Code FAQs

What is a QR code for texting?

It is a QR code that opens the messaging app with a recipient number and a message already filled in. The person scanning does not type anything — they see the prepared text and send it. It is commonly used for opt-in campaigns, feedback requests and support lines where you want people to reach you by text with a specific keyword.

Does scanning send the text message automatically?

No. The messaging app opens with the number and message prepared, and the person scanning has to press send. No QR code can send a message on someone’s behalf without their action — this is enforced by the phone, not by us.

Can I choose what the message says?

Yes. Whatever you enter as the message appears pre-written in the person’s messaging app, and they can edit it before sending. Short keywords work best: they survive truncation on every device and are simpler to process when the replies arrive.

Does a texting QR code work on both iPhone and Android?

Yes. Both use the standard SMS scheme that iOS and Android have supported for years, and the built-in camera app on each recognises it. Behaviour is near-identical — the messaging app opens with the fields populated and waits for the person to send.
